Shapenote Music Preservation Efforts

What can you do to aid in the efforts to preserve shapenote music? Well, we're glad you asked.

The primary goal of the project is to bring about a revival of interest in the tradition by inviting singers to become involved in singing conventions and gatherings. It continues to be committed to documenting the tradition's history.

In our efforts to document this style of singing, the project needs:

• names and biographies of persons who sang
• photographs and video recordings of singers
• audio recordings
• stories about singers and their contributions to the tradition
• obituaries of singers
• shapenote song books and old book satchels for carrying songbooks
• convention minutes, programs and announcements
• information on upcoming conventions and gatherings &
• information on persons who are participating in singings today.

We hope to increase the current shapenote music collection as well as provide access to these resources for others to study and appreciate.
